Just 45kms from Port aux Basques on the southern shore of Newfoundland is the tiny town of Rose Blanche – Harbour le Cou.
The area’s rugged coastline is watched over by the Rose Blanche Lighthouse, which was in operation from 1873 to the 1940s when it was abandoned. Most of the lighthouse fell into ruin, but thankfully the building’s spiral stone staircase extends into the tower wall which prevented the tower itself from collapsing. The only granite lighthouse in Atlantic Canada, it was reconstructed in 1999 and now you can climb those stairs to take in the view!
