Burgeo
Two hours down Route 480 from the Trans-Canada, past the caribou barrens, the road simply stops at the ocean. Burgeo is the end of the road — white sand beaches, a working harbour, and the ferry out to the island and fjord communities beyond.
Highlights:
- Sandbanks Provincial Park — rolling dunes and long white sand beaches, with camping and a pond warm enough to swim in
- Aaron’s Arm Trail — 5.3 km of boardwalk out and back, through forest and barren to a beach
- Maiden Tea Hill — short boardwalk climb to the best view in town, for sunsets and stargazing
- Burgeo Museum — the fishery and the military years, with music night every Wednesday evening in summer
- Seal Brook — waterfalls and a rocky swimming hole just outside town
- The harbour and the fjords — Bay de Loup, Bay de Vieux, Connoire Bay and White Bear Bay, with cliffs and waterfalls straight out of the water
- Eclipse Island — where Captain Cook measured longitude during the solar eclipse of 1766
- The coastal ferry terminal — the gateway to Ramea, Grey River and François
