Francois

Tucked along Newfoundland’s rugged south coast, the outport of Francois is a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered.

François — say it “Fran-sway” — is a village of painted houses at the head of a fjord, under a granite dome that rises 1,280 feet behind it. There are no roads and no cars. Everything moves on foot or by boat.

Highlights:

  • Charlie’s Head Trail — a moderate hike to views over the harbour
  • The Friar — a harder route for experienced hikers
  • Western Point Lighthouse Trail — the path the keepers used
  • Cook’s Hole — a short scramble with a bridge and a rope to a sea cave
  • Blow Me Down — the 1,280-foot granite dome above the village, with climbing routes
  • Devil’s Bay — granite cliffs rising straight from the ocean
  • Penguin and Gulch Cove Islands — nesting seabirds and grey seals
  • Cape La Hune — a resettled community, known locally as Q-sock
  • Kayaking — multi-day trips through the fjords and inlets
